Phish tickets at Hampton Coliseum - a sure thing

October 14th, 2008 · 33 Comments

So it’s been a REALLY long time since I last posted, but unfortunately I’ve been totally preoccupied with other ventures lately and haven’t had a chance to write.

This event just came across my radar and I thought it was worth briefly posting about.  Phish is playing three nights at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton Virginia on March 6, 7, and 8.   For those of you not in the jam band loop, this is a very big deal as Phish is definitely the most popular jam band of all time and they broke up several years ago.  They played three shows here a few years ago and tickets sold for a minimum of $500 per pair, up to a couple thousand dollars.  I’m sure that these three reunion shows will sell very well this time around also and would buy any tickets I could get my hands on.
Tickets go on sale this Saturday  10/18 at 10:00am ET at Ticketmaster HERE.

Good luck!

P.S. I fully expect to be crucified by angry Phish fans for posting this. They are definitely the most die hard anti-scalpers I have ever encountered.  The last time I sold Phish tickets I received some of the most vulgar and hateful emails I had ever read.  Fortunately free markets prevail and even scalper haters will buy tickets if they want them badly enough…

what’s your advice on how to ensure getting tickets for all 3 of these shows through ticketmaster? that lottery sure was a waste of efforts. other than keeping your time set to the us govt’s time, what do you do?

  • 3 Harpua // Oct 15, 2008 at 5:15 am

You don’t even know the half of it. At the shows I’ve seen Phish fans literally swipe the tickets out of scalpers hands and run (personally seen it at least 5 times and it definitely happens way more than that). I’ve seen scalpers get knocked to the ground and their tickets grabbed. The fans believe in something called (parking) “lot justice” where they will protect other fans from outsiders- scalpers, police, security, etc.

I’ve seen fans verbally berate scalpers, follow them around and not let them sell to any fans by berating fans who try to buy from them.

The fans will literally do anything to rip you off and get the tix, reversing charges on credit cards, etc. So scalpers be wary.

@ movefast - There is no way to ensure getting tickets to all three shows, it will be almost a lottery pick chance of getting tickets to one show. Follow the tips outlined in other posts on my site and have as many friends as possible trying to pull tickets for you right when they go onsale. It’s going to be more luck than skill with this one…

@ Harpua - Wow, those are some intense stories. I’ve been to a Phish show and the fans’ behavior around ticket resale is completely counter to the general way they carry themselves - peaceful, fun-loving, stoned (I know, definite stereotypes there). In my mind, the hypocrisy is mind boggling: be peaceful and compassionate, unless you’re doing something (completely legal) that I disagree with, in which case I’ll berate you or threaten to kill you and your family (that was literally in an email I once received).

I hope you or better yet your children get cancer and die a slow painful death. You are a leech that deserves to be placed against the wall. Fuck off and die. Dont come to the lots unless you want tasered and maced. Maybe a skateboard to your head will wake you up. The band does not support you nor do the fans. Do the world a favor and kill yourself. Oh and I’ve got as many tickets as you need,

  • 6 Matthew // Oct 15, 2008 at 9:35 am

Yeah I got plenty of tickets for you brokers out there. Just send the money western union.

  • 7 admin // Oct 15, 2008 at 9:37 am

Thanks Perry, that was easy, you just made my point.

  • 8 phish // Oct 15, 2008 at 9:50 am

you fucking dirt bag!! you should eat shit and die for scalping phish tickets. people like you ruin it for die hard phans!! fuck off you custy-fuck!!!

  • 9 Matt // Oct 15, 2008 at 7:44 pm

Please realize these comments are likely coming from teenage lowlifes and don’t represent the Phish community as a whole…

I can’t blame you for what you do.. shit, I’d do it with say Britney Spears or Miley Cyrus tickets if I could.

Try not to take them seriously.

    signed,
    a huge phish phan

  • 10 Phishman2001 // Oct 15, 2008 at 8:29 pm

You are basically just screwing people out of something they care deeply about to make a quick buck. It’s the way of the world I guess but nonetheless brutal and heartless…….. I wouldn’t try to rob you or anything, that’s definitely wrong, but would I feel justice was served when you caught a beatdown from some frustrated fans, you bet your ass I would!

  • 11 admin // Oct 15, 2008 at 8:48 pm

@ Matt - thanks, a rational person has emerged from the crowd. I definitely understand your point.

@Phisman2001 - So under your logic it’s wrong to rob someone, but it’s okay to physically assault a person for re-selling tickets (legal under most circumstances) to a musical artist that you enjoy?

  • 12 Harpua // Oct 16, 2008 at 8:22 am

The fans will act differently than normal because you are violating a social norm of the community. Scalping is simply not accepted by the fans. Unlike other concerts there is a true community with Phish where the fans will look out for one another and the shows are more than just concerts- they are important.

It’s like running into a church wearing nothing but a mankini and cursing and screaming- sure it’s legal but you can be pretty darn sure one of the churchgoers is going to engage in non-churchlike behavior and rough you up and drag you outside. And yes comparing Phish to a religion is appropriate. It’s like scalping tickets to see the Pope.

And yeah watch out for skateboards because they are both a weapon and a getaway vehicle.

  • 13 Guelah // Oct 16, 2008 at 12:05 pm

    harpua - selective musings…

Phish shows do have nice community feel - but there are also a lot of assholes there too.

As to disrupting a church…What you’re saying, in essence, is that if someone doesn’t like something that someone else is doing then violence is OK.

So to bring this down to a ridiculous conclusion. Say I see someone smoking pot at a phish show. And say that I don’t like people smoking pot, not to mention that it is technically illegal. Would I and any others, be justified in beating the smokers down?

Does this sound stupid? Well, yes but it is the same logic that you are using. You’re advocating mob rules.

The only way to bring down the secondary ticket prices is for people NOT to buy the inflated prices. Period.

Is scalping fair? Hell no, but then not much is fair in life.

Deal with it and grow up.

I think everyone needs to take some deep breaths and calm down. All of us are feeling a sense of anxiety not knowing for sure if we’re going to be able to get tickets to see our favorite band grace the stage once again. Just because we’re worried and frustrated does not justify the injecting of threats of violence into the dialogue about the moral merits of selling tickets for a profit. I am personally against the practice of scalping but I’m sure as hell not going to threaten anyone over it. We live in a free society and if someone wants to make a profit on tickets - although I don’t agree with the practice - it’s their prerogative. In an ideal world, everyone who wants to see Phish would be able to do so… and at a reasonable price. Unfortunately that’s not really possible.

Finally, I would like to add that most importantly, I feel blessed to be able to say that I’ve seen Phish over 35 times. They have enhanced my life immeasurably and I thank the band and the Phish community for the countless amazing times I’ve had at Phish shows. Regarding the upcoming shows, we should all feel lucky that the boys have finally decided to give us all additional chances (however small they are) to share in the heavenly feeling one can only experience at a Phish show. Good luck to you all. Thank you Mr. Minor.

  • 16 Matthew // Oct 16, 2008 at 11:15 pm

    By the way I’m 33

  • 17 Matthew // Oct 16, 2008 at 11:17 pm

It’s not the fact that you were a broker, it’s that you are an asshole for even putting this up. I’m sure your a sadist and get off on seeing people hurt.

  • 18 jazz // Oct 17, 2008 at 8:39 am

i’ll never forget snatching tix from a big ass dude scalping tix then jetting. he chased me around a car like a dog chasing his tail. then about 20 kids saw what was up and surrounded the car. dude walked. show raged.

  • 19 Rhigh22 // Oct 18, 2008 at 11:53 am

I can’t believe I’m falling into this but I can’t help it. I’m pissed. Talk about robbery, selling a $50 dollar ticket for $600 is robbery. Why would you even post this man? Seeing this is like having it rubbed in my face that I couldn’t get tickets. You should take this shit down, seriously.

I didn’t get tickets through the lottery, so I get up this morning, can’t get through ticket master, then I look at E-Bay and see hundreds of tickets for sale, furthering my anger, then I stumble across this. Your “heads up” blog served its purpose bro, take it down. Its fucking heart breaking.

Happy E-Baying, I hope your shit gets tracked and canceled.

Ah, one last note on this. You call us hypocrites for getting pissed at scalpers, so my question is…

How do you react when someone fucks with your family?

  • 20 phan240 // Oct 19, 2008 at 8:35 pm

the thing is, you KNOW you are going to sell those tickets for more than 15% profit. The re-sale license / limitations warn against this, but yet you are glad and see nothing wrong selling them for $400 each on e-bay.
    That is the bottom line.
There are peaceful hippies, but you my man, you do not deserve to even remotely know what they are like to be around.
Good luck and keep hiding behind the computer screen, because lot is going to be vicious for your kind…

So I have a question about stubhub. I was talking to a friend the other day who won the Hampton lottery and put the tix up on stubhub and sold them. Now he is feeling bad about selling them for more than face, and wondering what the legal ramifications are of backing out of the deal with stubhub. Any thoughts from admin?

  • 25 phishfan420 // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:43 pm

FYI, ‘fans’ that pay a cent over face to see a band that hasnt hit the stage in 4 years are retarded. let it go. summer will be here soon

  • 27 Stimbot // Oct 26, 2008 at 9:40 pm

Phish sucks. Their fans are a bunch of rich suburban trustafarians. They can afford to pay $500.

I’ll pay $10 and go to a real show.

Brian, I am calling your bluff. I set up a deal with your skinny ass and you already have the same tickets listed on Stubhub you lying piece of cheese. You are not a Phan. You’re a rugrat wino with a wooden leg. I will sneak into you house one night and take your cat toys. I will eat your food. I will wear your wifes panythose and smell the crotch in them after she wears them. I will dress up like your wife and we can have crossdressing sex. I will take pictures of us and pleasure myself later after you go to bed. I will pee on you and let you shit on my face. I will 69 you in while wearing your wifes suntan colored panyhose.

Yea, it was kind of douchey to put this up. Im not a fan of the band, but I dont think you should be helping scalpers. They already have the resources to screw fans, so they dont need a heads up. I find it funny scalpers quake in fear of phans, who are unwilling to put up with price gouging. Wish all fans would do this, and not just Phish heads. Say your father was dying of cancer and the drugs to treat him cost you… well, thats where the free market comes in! Sorry to say, but you might not afford it. Whats that you say? Its illegal? So is buying blocks of tickets to resell well above face value. There is no ceiling on prices, or moral code of conduct with scalpers or brokers (same thing - one has an office). But dont you know it all works out in the end. Karmas a bitch.
